TOWN OF HEMPSTEAD AND HOMELAND SECURITY TO HOST EMERGENCY CITIZEN PREPAREDNESS TRAINING
Supervisor Laura Gillen, NYS Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services to host training session for hundreds of local residents on how to prepare for natural and man-made disasters
(HEMPSTEAD, NY) – Town of Hempstead Supervisor Laura Gillen will be joined by officials from the New York State Department of Homeland Security and emergency service personnel to train hundreds of local residents on how to properly prepare for natural or man-made disasters. The special Citizen Preparedness Training program will provide citizens with the tools and resources to prepare for emergencies, allowing them to respond accordingly and recover as quickly as possible from disasters. The training will take place on Sunday, June 30th at 11:00 AM inside the Nathan L.H. Bennett Pavilion at Hempstead Town Hall, 1 Washington St.
Topics will include developing a family emergency plan, stockpiling emergency supplies, responding to an active shooter threat and registering for the NY-Alert. Participants of the training will receive a certificate of completion and an emergency response backpack and starter kit, courtesy of the Citizen Preparedness Corps.
Hurricane season typically peaks through late October and runs until late November.
“Our goal is to train as many residents as possible, because the more people we can help prepare for the next disaster; the more likely we are to save lives,” said Town of Hempstead Supervisor Laura Gillen. “We want the Town of Hempstead to be not only the largest Town in America, but also the safest.”
In order to qualify for a free emergency response backpack and starter kit, residents must register beforehand through prepare.ny.gov, or by calling Supervisor Laura Gillen’s office at 516-812-3260.
