HUNTINGTON WILL STAND IN VIGIL FRIDAY EVENING JOINING OVER ONE THOUSAND VIGILS PLANNED NATIONALLY AND INTERNATIONALLY INCLUDING SEVERAL HERE ON LONG ISLAND AS WE STAND IN SOLIDARITY TO PROTEST THE INHUMANE CONDITIONS IN WHICH MIGRANT CHILDREN AND FAMILIES ARE BEING HELD
Huntington, NY- Friday evening activists and concerned citizens will join a worldwide coalition dedicated to human rights, and the fundamental principle behind democracy that all human beings have a right to life, liberty and dignity. We want our country to once again represent the words in-scripted on the Statue of Liberty that welcomes the tired, huddled masses yearning to breathe free. We want our country to welcome those legally seeking asylum in our country as they escape danger and violence. Instead however , we are seeing children and families held in inhumane and overcrowded conditions and we are seeing ongoing family separation. Children, the sick and elderly are confined to “icebox” rooms for weeks at a time. Unbelievably, children as young as 4 months have been taken from their parents, medicine is confiscated, medical care is withheld, and LGBTQ and disabled individuals are held in solitary confinement. We have over 13,000 children being held in prison-like detention facilities across the country for months on end instead of with loving families who await them . We are seeing children die. Attendees will stand in silent vigil as we read the names of the children who have died. Local folk music artists will join in the event as we light our candles at sunset as we demand that our nation once again be a beacon of light and hope.
