THE ARTS, AN INTEGRAL PART OF COMMUNITY REVITALIZATION:
TEATRO YERBABRUJA ANNOUNCES TWO 2019 EVENTS FOR DOWNTOWN CENTRAL ISLIP
The process of revitalizing Central Islip’s downtown Carleton Avenue corridor continues with two programs organized by Teatro Yerbabruja, a nonprofit organization that for many years has provided cultural programming in that and other underserved Long Island communities.
“Many Faces One Community” – the 2 nd annual Downtown Central Islip Arts Festival – is planned for Sunday September 22 from 1-5 PM, along Carleton Avenue south of Suffolk Avenue and the train tracks. Family-friendly and fun for the kids as well as grown-ups, including art exhibits and professional instruction; and exciting and danceable live music ranging from The Liverpool Shuffle’s Beatles hits to the haunting and earthy songs of renowned vocalist Mariana Lima and guitarist Julian Soler, then to the various Latin American dance styles of Fiesta Tropical Triple M, and then to the hip hop artist Dudley Music … with the otherwise silent changeover moments filled in by DJ Jomero.
Also, a recipient of a Destination Downtown Award from Suffolk County, Teatro Yerbabruja is engaging in a public art banner project as a means of maintaining and increasing public awareness of and support for downtown Central Islip’s revitalization program, especially the role that local and diverse culture and entertainment play in successfully creating a more desirable community in which to live and work. The organization’s Call for Artists invites each interested artist to submit by October 15 up to four original street banner images which creatively bring to mind historic downtown Central Islip, celebrate community diversity and unity, and/or the fruits of a successfully revitalized Long Island community. Cash prizes will be awarded to the 1 st , 2 nd and 3 rd place winners in each of two categories, namely professional artists and students, with a community celebration held on November 24. Application forms and detailed Guidelines are available on Teatro Yerbabruja’s web site, www.teatroyerbabruja.org, and via a link on the organization’s Facebook page.
